With COVID-19 muddling the normal life of almost every country in the world and taking thousands of lives, medical institutions are trying their best to find a potential COVID-19 vaccine for this pandemic causing virus since the beginning.
Hyderabad based company Bharat Biotech and Indian Council of Medical Research have collaborated to form the home-grown COVID-19 vaccine COVAXIN, which has shown promising results till now in all the lab tests. With only clinical trials remaining, govt is constantly pushing these two institutions to fast track every possible step and launch a productive vaccine by mid-August, leaving the scientific community puzzled as to why things are being completed in a rush.
Till now, Bhubaneshwar’s SUM and IMS, along with 12 other city hospitals, are assigned for the clinical trials and the list may increase in the future if the situation demands.
With scientists regularly questioning the potential risk of using a failed COVID-19 vaccine to the public, govt is declining to give any replies and zero to no attention leaving all the questions at a dead end. With phase I and II of the clinical tests starting as soon as June 7, the expected launch of the COVAXIN is set for 15th August on the eve of Independence day. With nothing but expectations, everyone is hoping to get a positive response from BBIL and ICMR in August.
Conclusion:
The situation demands fast-tracking of many processes, but everything should be done only after a minimum number of quality checks. Just because of saving a few days, a failed COVID-19 vaccine can easily put back a country on the back foot. With the rise in risk, everything must be done quickly and correctly.
